Smart Electricity Meter (SE-meter) is quickly gaining popularity in China in recent years. The 5-year plan calls for in the installation of 240 million SE-meters. This will bring the total of SE-meter installation to 500 million units. SE-meter is required to work non-stop for at least 7 years, consequently the power consumption becomes a very important issue. The lower power consumption will directly translate into long-term savings for the urban electricity suppliers, ultimately the savings for us consumers. This article presents a low power supply design for SE-meter applications. The design meets and exceeds the power and EMI requirements, per Chinese government regulations. The power consumptions during stand-by mode is reduced to 0.4~0.6W per meter, while reducing the overall power supply component cost by 20~30% at the same time. This article details this low power supply design for SE-meters.
