To solve the parameters threshold setting problem of travelling wave velocity and line length for traveling wave based hybrid power lines fault location, the transmission characteristics of traveling wave were analyzed, and a novel traveling wave based fault location method with non-parameter-threshold-setting was presented in this paper. First, the standard array of traveling wave arrival time difference between the two terminal of line was built with more faults simulated in the different positions of the line. Second, when the actual fault happened, the arrival time difference was measured and compared with each element of the standard array to detect the fault section. Finally, the fault point relative position in the fault section was calculated, and the fault point accurate position was also determined with the position of each tower or cable joint. The simulation results showed that the effectiveness and feasibility of the presented method with non-parameter-threshold-setting for hybrid power lines, and is with the simple algorithm, strong practicality and high accuracy for fault location.
