Electrical Overhead transmission lines serve as the connection between users and power plants in power systems, henceforth reliable protection against lightning and safety operation of power system are exceedingly important. Multiple impulse lightning current is confirmed by analyzing data measured on transmission line in this paper. Statistics and analysis of lightning wave front time, wave tail time, polarity and amplitude parameters are given.. The simulation models of multiple impulse lightning, overhead transmission line, towers, insulator string and arrester are established by the electromagnetic simulation software ATP-EMTP. Simulations are carried out to calculate the response of a lightning arrester installed in the circuit when a direct strike and a counterattack occur under monopulse and multi-pulse conditions respectively. Compare the difference of overvoltage between two different impulse lightning lines.. Simulation analysis shows that: The lightning arrester can effectively limit the amplitude of lightning overvoltage. And When multi-pulse lightning impulse occurs, transmission lines will have higher lightning overvoltage and longer duration, which makes lightning protection more severe.
