With strong coupling between cable and grid, cables fault may affect the whole grid and its devices. Only irreversible fault can be detected via traditional time domain reflectometry, which is opposite to the proactive tendency for intelligent detective methods. What makes it possible to detect weaker fault, the defect, is frequency domain reflectometry which has received more and more attention. These so called defects will deteriorate to irreversible fault with time goes by. However, there are still shortcomings in frequency domain reflectometry, such as the misjudged points, shield band in location diagram, and lower locating accuracy. For improving the capabilities of cable fault detection and location, a new method based on the combination of extended kurtosis and frequency domain reflectometry was proposed in this paper, which can decrease the misjudged point significantly and increase the locating accuracy at higher bandwidth. Then the high accuracy and high distinguishability in locating diagram was implemented.
