A permeability measurement approach for weak magnetic materials with large volume
The magnetic permeability, μ, is an important material parameter, which reflects fundamental electromagnetic properties of the material. For high permeability (relative permeability μr> 100) measurement, materials are mostly measured by a closed-loop magnetic core and current-carrying windings. For the magnetic permeability measurement of a weak magnetic material (relative permeability μr is near 1), a special shape of test samples is typically required in order to fit the magnetization circuit, and machining the sample may cause damage to the material magnetic property and yield incorrect measurement result. In this study, we present a method for measuring the permeability of a large-volume weak magnetic material. The proposed approach has no special requirements on the shape of the measurement sample, thereby can avoid the permeability change caused by mechanical processing. Through finite element simulation, the measurement range and main error sources of this permeability measurement method are discussed.
