This paper first analyzes the main causes of the commutation failure in the inverter side of the converter station, then combine the main reason for the commutation failure of the inverter side of the converter station to research the subtransient characteristics, transient and steady state characteristics of the synchronous condenser to analyze its operating characteristics. This paper simulates the situation that when the voltage amplitude of the inverter system in the inverter station drops to the threshold value and rises by 10%, the result of commutation failure whether the inverter side is installed synchronous condenser or not. The simulation results show that the synchronous condenser have good subtransient, transient and steady-state characteristics can provide full-time scale for the system to provide reactive power compensation and voltage support, not only improve the voltage stability of AC system in the inverter side, but also can effectively prevent a serious commutation failure of the inverter commutation failure even inhibit the occurrence of commutation failure.
